The objective of this study was to review the actual design and operation of the crude sterols distillation system in order to minimize the sterols losses. The study objective was satisfied by recommending operational practice changes combined with some distillation process system modifications.

In principle, the scope of work for this study is:

• Develop a Simulation Model of the distillation system to represent the Heat and Material Balance. This work will include:
  • Plant Data Collection
  • Simulation Model tuning with the actual operation data
• Review the main parameters of operation in reference to the best practices used in tall oil distillation, considering materials that are subject to thermal degradation. The parameters to be considered will be reflux ratio, feed location, steam injection, residence time, and product specifications.
• Define operating parameters to maximize the Crude sterols production.
• Conceptual definition and qualitative analysis for distillation system modification options to minimize sterols thermal degradation
